JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility

UGC NET Economics Preparation

UGC NET Economics is the standard route for JRF eligibility and Assistant Professor eligibility in Indian universities and colleges.

Before you begin

Who can apply for UGC NET Economics?

Master's route
A recognised master's degree or equivalent normally requires 55% for General/EWS; 50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and third-gender candidates. Check NTA's rules for your degree and subject.
Still studying?
Master's students and final-year four-year bachelor's students can apply provisionally, subject to the bulletin's completion and marks conditions.
Four-year bachelor's route
This route normally requires 75%, with applicable relaxations. It permits JRF and PhD admission, not Assistant Professor eligibility. A three-year bachelor's alone is insufficient.
Age
JRF has a usual upper age limit of 30, with specified relaxations. There is no upper age limit for NET Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission.

What can qualifying NET lead to?

NET results distinguish JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission. Your result category and qualification determine which routes are open. A teaching appointment or university admission still requires the institution's selection process.

Who it is for

Is this exam right for you?

For students aiming at research, teaching, PhD pathways and academic careers in economics.

Exam format

How do the two papers work?

Paper I

Teaching and research aptitude, 50 MCQs, 100 marks.

Paper II

Economics subject paper, 100 MCQs, 200 marks.

Paper II Economics

  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics
  • Statistics and econometrics
  • Mathematical economics
  • International economics
  • Public economics
  • Money and banking
  • Growth and development
  • Environmental economics
  • Indian economy

Paper I Aptitude

  • Teaching aptitude
  • Research aptitude
  • Reading comprehension and communication
  • Logical reasoning and data interpretation
  • ICT, people-development-environment and higher education

Recommended preparation

Books, resources and study method.

Treat Paper II as a full economics syllabus, not a last-month MCQ drill.
Use Paper I practice separately so it does not steal time from the economics core.
Revise with topic-wise tests and keep track of the questions you miss, because NET rewards breadth and recall.

Reference resources

Suggested books and sources.

Paper II Economics Sources

  • Use standard microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, econometrics, mathematical economics, public economics, international economics, money and banking, development and Indian economy texts topic by topic.
  • Keep separate short notes for definitions, diagrams, formulae and frequently confused concepts.
  • Revise breadth with topic-wise MCQs rather than reading one large source end to end.

Paper I and Practice

  • Prepare Paper I aptitude separately: teaching aptitude, research aptitude, reading comprehension, communication, reasoning, data interpretation, ICT and higher education.
  • Keep a short list of repeated MCQ mistakes and revise them before mocks.
  • Attempt mixed-topic tests only after topic-wise revision is stable.
