UPSC Economics Optional — Mains Paper I & II

Economics is one of the optional subjects in the UPSC Civil Services Mains examination. Candidates who choose it write two papers of 250 marks each. With genuine conceptual command it is among the more rewarding optionals, and it overlaps heavily with the General Studies economy portion — so the same preparation pays off twice.

Exam pattern

Two descriptive (conventional) papers in the Mains stage — Paper I and Paper II, 250 marks each, three hours each, for 500 marks in total. Answers are written long-form; there is no objective component in the optional.

Indian Economic Service (IES)

The Indian Economic Service is a Group A central service for economists, conducted by the UPSC. IES officers advise on economic policy across government — the Ministry of Finance, NITI Aayog and other departments. Eligibility requires a postgraduate degree in economics (or applied/business economics or econometrics). The number of seats is very small.

Why it's uniquely hard

The IES has a narrow aspirant pool, which means good, focused preparation resources are genuinely scarce. The economics papers go to postgraduate depth, and success depends on conceptual command rather than memorising answers.

Exam pattern

A written examination of 1,000 marks followed by a viva-voce (interview) of 200 marks. The written stage has six papers — two qualifying/general papers and four economics papers — all descriptive.

RBI Grade B DEPR — Department of Economic Policy and Research

The DEPR is the research wing of the Reserve Bank of India. As a DEPR officer you work on monetary policy, inflation analysis, banking-sector research and India's external sector. Recruitment is highly competitive, with a small number of vacancies each cycle.

Why it's uniquely hard

RBI does not release past exam papers, and there are no official question banks. Every question bank in existence — including ours — is memory-based, reconstructed by candidates who sat the exam. Preparation therefore has to be conceptually deep, not pattern-based. You have to understand the economics.

Conducted in phases. Phase I is an objective (online) paper on economics. Phase II has three papers — Paper I objective on economics, Paper II descriptive on economics, and Paper III a descriptive English (writing skills) paper — followed by an interview.

A computer-based test (CBT) with two papers conducted in a single session. Paper I tests general teaching and research aptitude (50 questions, 100 marks). Paper II is the Economics subject paper (100 questions, 200 marks). All questions are multiple-choice with no negative marking.
